Mallow – healing power of flowers for dry cough

Mallow (Malva sylvestris) is a medicinal plant that is not only incredibly beautiful, but thanks to its mucilage it also boasts a very long tradition in natural medicine. It flowers in different colors from June to October. The flowers are found in pink, purple, blue and red. We will tell you how to use them and what tea blend we prepare with them.

What benefits does mallow have for our health?

Mallow (wild) usually grows along roadsides, on field paths or in fields. The leaves are mainly used in cooking. The flowers are also edible. For example, you can add the raw leaves and flowers to salts or smoothies. However, mallow is mainly used as a medicinal herb.

It promotes the production of mucus and can help with stomach and intestinal problems as it ensures that some sort of protective layer is placed on the irritated areas of the mucous membranes. Especially in autumn and winter you should not forget about your mucous membranes. They play a central role in protecting us from invading pathogens. A mallow flower herbal tea can also provide relief in the case of a dry cough. A sort of protective layer also forms on the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat. The same effect occurs when you scratch your throat. So if you get a cold you should prepare a cup of mallow herbal tea. A little lemon juice will make the tea change color slightly. It then becomes slightly reddish. Not all herbal medicine books recommend tea or a hot infusion. To best preserve the mucilage, a cold extract can be prepared which must be left to infuse for 6-12 hours so that the active ingredients dissolve in the water. This is suitable for gargling, for example, if you have a sore mouth or sore throat. Tannins and phenols may also have an anti-inflammatory effect.

What tea blend with mallow can you prepare yourself?

We make many tea blends ourselves by drying the flowers of various medicinal plants and blending them together so we have a great flower and herbal tea on hand in winter and when needed. For example, marigold, mallow flowers and marshmallow complement each other well. Even a tea like this is something to look at, isn’t it? You can also dry the flowers individually and mix them together if necessary.

By the way, be careful when taking medications. Mallow, due to its mucilage, can inhibit the absorption of drugs in the intestine. It is therefore advisable to drink the herbal tea two hours apart if it is necessary to take other active ingredients. By the way, there are still marigolds on the tray.
