We asked a landscape architect how to match the color of ‘Very Peri’ in a flower garden Linas Puodžiūtė Ragauskienė. Lina compiled 5 color palettes and selected different plant combinations for each. If you are looking for ideas for your flower garden, you will find 16 such combinations here, so read on

Spalva “Much Peri”.
In case you didn’t know, Very Peri is the 2022 color of the year created by the Pantone Color Institute. Every year, the institute that forecasts global color trends selects a color that sets guidelines for creators of fashion, interiors and, of course, the environment.
The color of «Very Peri» is very similar to purple. It is unique in that the color of «Very peri» appears to move, so we can see both red and blue. It is difficult to reflect it in the interior and with plants, where shades are never lacking, this color is very convenient to use. We recently shared a post about Pantone’s color of the year for 2022 – you can found here. There is also a list of plants that bloom in the color «Very Peri».
And this time we will share ideas on how to combine this color in the flower garden.
Color Palette 1: Very Peri – Yellow – White
For the first combination, Lina chose yellow as a counterpoint to the Very Peri purple and complemented this combination with white.
Let’s take a look at how this color palette was created.
There are many rules for combining colors – we have discussed many of them in the article «Color matching in the garden: simple rules that always work». If you look at the photo above, where Lina Puodžiūtė Ragauskienė was photographed at the «Garden Style» conference, you will see the classic color wheel. If you choose two opposite colors on the color wheel, you will get a contrasting combination. Purple and yellow are opposite each other on the color wheel.
You can safely complement the combinations with neutral colors: white, gray, black, green, brown.
Lina proposes vegetable combinations with this color palette:
- Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Fascination’, sunflower (Helenium) ‘Kanaria’, aster bush (Aster dumosus) ‘Kristina’;
- Geranium ‘Rozanne’, Geranium (Coreopsis verticillata), Physostegia virginiana ‘Alba’ (see photo collage above);
- Cruminal Asra (Aster dumos) ‘Lady in Blue’, Zerinchio Rudbecky (Rudbeckia Fulgida) ‘Golden’, Blowingguidininis (Phystegia virginal) ‘Alba’.
Color Palette 2: Very Peri – Light Green – Straw Color

The purple shade of «Very Peri» will stand out perfectly next to the green tones and calm straw color that various bell-shaped plants can give the flowerbed.
This is another great way to create a tasteful combination: choose a dominant color and pair it with a neutral colored background. This is exactly what Lina did: Lina’s suggested plant combinations:
- Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Fascination’, Alchemilla mollis ‘Thriller’, Korean broom (Calamagrostis brachytricha) (see collage);
- Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Little Spire’, Alchemilla mollis ‘Thriller’, Korean sedum (Calamagrostis brachytricha);
- True lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) ‘Hidcote Blue’, delicate rasakila (Alchemilla mollis) ‘Thriller’, autumn honeysuckle (Sesleria Autumnalis).
3 color palette: Very Peri – Gray / Silver – White
This combination is another example of choosing a main color and complementing it with neutral colors. In this case, «Very Peri» will sound between shades of gray and white.
Vegetable combinations offered by Lina:
- Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Little Spire’, Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Nana’, Centaurea montana ‘Alba’ (see collage).
For a semi-shaded flower garden:
- Ajuga reptans, hybrid Heuchera ‘Mint Frost’, Lamium maculatum ‘White Nancy’;
- Vinca minor, hosta hybrida ‘Fire And Ice’, lungwort (Pulmonaria) ‘Silver Shimmers’;
- Campanula poscharskyana ‘Stella’, Tiarella cordifolia, Pulmonaria hybrida ‘Opal’.
Palette of 4 colors: Very Peri – Purple – Pink
All purple, lilac and pink shades go well with the color «Very Peri».
The effect of an accent color in a floral arrangement can be enhanced by using related colors. By combining such soft color shades, you will be able to confidently play with different varieties, heights and shapes of plants – a flower garden will look truly elegant.
Here are some of these combinations:
- Phaseno Catolė (Nepeta x Fassen) ‘Kit Kat’, in the gonak in the shaline (Salvia nemorous) ‘Caradonna’, rožė (Rose) ‘Leonardo Da Vinci’;
- Nepeta x faassenii ‘Walker’s Low’, Liatris spicata, Echinacea Purpurea (see collage);
- Salvia nemorosa ‘Marcus’, Geranium magnificum, yarrow (Achillea millefolium) ‘Cherry Queen’.
5 color palette: Very Peri monochrome flowerbed
Even monochromatic flower beds can be breathtaking. Therefore, it is safe to use only «Very Peri» colored plants. Such a flower garden will have a relaxing atmosphere, but it will not seem boring if you use different plants, says Lina.
Recommended plant combinations:
- Common honeysuckle (Perovskia atriplicifolia) ‘Little Spire’, sage (Salvia nemorosa) ‘Marcus’, lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) ‘Hidcote Blue’;
- Corona astros (Aster dumos) ‘Lady in Blue’, guoyinis chalaavia (Salvia nemorosa) ‘Caradonna’, snapite (Geranium) ‘Rozanne’;
- Ajuga reptans, Vinca minor, Campanula poscharskyana ‘Stella’ – this is perfect for the shaded side (see collage).
