The oil should be 100% essential fragrance oil. However, it is important to pay attention to organic certification. You can also make the recipe with fresh orange peel, as long as it is an organic orange. Then you should prepare an oily macerate (oily extract). The oil should be liquid. For example, almond oil. The simplest way is to pour 40 ml of almond oil onto the peel of two or three oranges, leave them to infuse in a warm place for two or three weeks and then strain the peels. With 40 ml of almond oil you can then replace 30 g of coconut oil and the teaspoon of almond oil in the hand balm recipe. Cocoa butter is added in the same quantity.
Lots of recipes in our wild herbs magazine
Nature gives us many fantastic medicinal plants. We would like to raise awareness of medicinal plants and inspire with simple and natural recipes. We will show you this in the current winter issue of Kräuterkeller magazine (available here) our favorite recipes. The magazine is available in both digital and printed versions in our small herbal medicine shop www.die-moderne-Kräuterhexe.de available.

Preparing hand balm
The ingredients are carefully dissolved one by one in a bain-marie, stirring continuously. We start with the cocoa butter, then the coconut oil, add the almond oil and finally add the fragrance oil. There is already a wonderful scent of orange in the kitchen. As you can see the preparation is quite quick. Filled into glass jars, the balm is then left to cool and only then is the lid screwed on. The cocoa butter ensures that the hand balm solidifies at room temperature, but this takes a few hours. If that’s too long for you, it’s pretty quick out now in the winter. We photographed the warm, cool balm directly outside for this article, and it solidified within an hour. However, close the lid only at the end. Any condensation could cause mold formation. That’s why you always close the lid only after it has cooled down.

How can this balm take care of your hands?
Rich cocoa butter and moisturizing coconut oil can provide long-lasting care for your hands and protect them from dryness. The almond oil it contains is rich in linoleic acid, which can strengthen the skin’s resistance. Almond oil further hydrates the skin and can also counteract skin irritation. There are no chemical additives in this conditioner. It’s completely natural and really quick to prepare. If you use orange essential oil (Citrus Aurantium Dulcis), this delicate scent is said to have calming and mood-enhancing properties in aromatherapy. It can also provide inner peace. Orange essential oil also has skin healing properties.
Conservation and shelf life
Filled into small, dark jars and stored in a cool place, the hand balm can be used throughout autumn and winter. The hand balm is also a great gift for Christmas.
