A beautiful lawn on a farm: how to create one without large investments

To create a prestigious lawn, a special grass blend is used. The terrestrial part of such a lawn is low, and the roots are shallow, so they absorb moisture and nutrients only from the top layer of the soil. For this reason the lawn requires a lot of care:

• Continuous irrigation;
• Continuous cutting;
• Periodic fertilization;
• Periodic scarification (I talked about scarification Here);
• Periodic aeration.

The new lawn will be very beautiful, so it is more worth reviving the old lawn on the farm.

Turf resistance

Have you seen a farm lawn with an irrigation system? The farm lawn is made up of different types of plants. The large variety of above-ground plants shows that the underground part of the lawn is also very diverse: the long roots find the necessary moisture and nutrients in the deeper layers of the earth. That’s why frequent watering is not necessary.

The lawn is much more durable than the previously mentioned prestige lawn. Therefore, do not rush to destroy it!

You just have to embellish it.

How to make the lawn more beautiful

A recipe is mow often! You can turn a prestigious, well-maintained lawn into a normal lawn if you rarely mow it. And you can turn a simple farm lawn into a silky green carpet if you mow it often.

Ask why?

Not all grasses tolerate mowing equally, so by constantly mowing the lawn, you will change its species composition: over time, those that do not tolerate mowing will disappear, and those that tolerate mowing will take their place. You’ll notice a decrease in foliage plants and an increase in bluebells – just what you need!

Therefore, frequent mowing alone can dramatically change the appearance while maintaining the resilience of your home lawn.

This method works in almost all cases, except one which I’ll talk about in a moment.

To speed up the work

To mow large areas faster, there are no lawnmowers like lawn tractors. I recently visited Sigitas Farmer, where I tried it lawn tractor. I really liked it, so I wanted to try something similar on my farm. I chose the John Deere Z335E because:

• Very convenient for me as a driver;
• Controlled by joystick (how fun!);
• It can rotate 360 ​​degrees (it’s easy to turn around when cutting a row, it’s easy to get around plants more precisely);

Throw the grass clippings sideways in a row. What you can do with it:

• Rake it up and use it to mulch the garden or take it to the compost bin;
• Furthermore, you can order a hopper to collect the cut grass and everything will be faster;
• If you mow often, there won’t be much grass clippings and you can just spread it on the spot. The grass decomposes on the spot and becomes an excellent fertilizer for the lawn.

After all, comfort depends on how often and how willingly you mow the lawn, right?

3 tips from life

And finally, some advice from my life:

1. Irregularities. If your farm lawn is grown on uncultivated arable land, you won’t get anywhere: to create a beautiful lawn you will have to level the area. And then it’s up to you to decide whether to plant a lawn or leave it to nature: over time the lawn will grow on its own.
2. Moles. Scatter moles: your lawn will be smoother, making the work of your lawnmower easier. It is true that you should never block the opening of a mole, because moles breathe through it, and if they lose an air cavity, they will make a new one, and even more than one.

3. Training. If you decide to buy a lawn tractor, don’t rush to mow the grass right away – practice driving without the mowing function. The John Deere Z335E is extremely maneuverable and can rotate 360 ​​degrees. And controlling the joysticks may seem like a little challenge at first. As I already said, everything is based on my experience and learned mistakes: a bush on the farm did not pass the tractor tests and was accidentally mowed. My training didn’t take long, and once I got the hang of the controls, I was able to mow the entire farm lawn quickly and happily. OK, I’m lying, all the housemates took turns mowing the lawn, there was even a queue to try it!
