Let’s face it, we are real Lithuanians: we like to grow our own food and we like to eat seriously. An unbalanced diet is one of the causes of cardiovascular disease and many times you have heard scary statistics. However, it is possible to grow vegetables that lower blood pressure or at least have a positive effect on the entire vascular system.
LEAFY GREENS
Spinach, kale, chard, kale and broccoli are all considered part of the leafy green vegetable family. This group of vegetables is highly nutritious and rich in vitamin A and iron, making it an excellent choice for heart health. Leafy green vegetables have a very low blood sugar level, so they can be safely consumed by people with diabetes or those at risk. They also contain natural substances that help relax blood vessels, reducing the load on the heart and blood pressure.
Green leafy vegetables have a positive effect on the heart and provide minimal calories.
Greens are a great choice for a home garden. They are quite easy to grow, perfect for salads, as a side dish or for sandwiches. Sow or plant in early spring as soon as the soil has warmed, repeat several times a year to have fresh leaves again. On hotter days, it can be more difficult to grow vegetables so they don’t flower too quickly or go rancid. But if you plant in small quantities a couple of times a year, you will definitely have more than one harvest. When and which vegetables to sow to have them all year round, read here.
In addition, vegetables are grown perfectly at home on the windowsill (Here you will find a particularly simple way to grow spices), on the balcony in flower beds or on the terrace in beautiful pots. Combine them with each other, plant them together with blooming flowers – this way, not only the stomach and heart will have food, but also the eyes.
GREEN PEAS
Peas contain fiber, various vitamins, minerals and proteins. Vitamin K1, of which peas are very rich, helps keep bones strong. And vitamin K is especially useful for the heart and blood vessels, supports normal blood clotting, stops bleeding, promotes wound healing and increases resistance to infections.
Peas are easy to grow, the short vegetation period allows you to enjoy a nutritious and delicious harvest. It’s really easy, sow them together with your children in early spring and enjoy a great harvest.
Growing peas is fun not only for children, but also on everyone’s table.
You can use fresh peas, prepare salads and soups with them, sauté them briefly with fresh carrots as a side dish. Try all kinds of spreads, to which peas give not only a good taste, but also a green color. It grows too much and you don’t have time to eat it, even better, you can freeze it and have these treats all year round.
GARLIC
According to research, minced or crushed garlic releases the biologically active compound allicin, which reduces hypertension without significant side effects. Allicin is released when garlic is chewed, so it must be eaten fresh to get the benefits – garlic capsules do not have this effect.
However, even on this point scientists disagree. Some argue that the effects of garlic consumption on blood pressure are generally short-lived.
Garlic: Vegetables That Lower Blood Pressure? Scientists disagree on this. But garlic is still useful, include it in your garden and in your diet.
Maybe it’s true, or maybe it’s a myth: we’ll let future generations of scientists decide. Meanwhile, it is worth growing garlic just for its bactericidal properties. There’s no doubt about this, because garlic can also act as an antibiotic for some bacteria.
BEETS
Everyone knows beets: vegetables that lower blood pressure and help the heart.
Beets are highly nutritious and rich in folate, manganese and potassium. Use more than just beetroot. There are many varieties of beets that are also nutritious and delicious.

TOMATOES
Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant found in tomatoes. This antioxidant prevents cholesterol from settling on the walls of the heart’s blood vessels, thus helping to lower blood pressure. Tomatoes are also rich in vitamin C and fiber.
For those suffering from hypertension it is advisable to eat as many potassium-rich foods as possible, and tomatoes are definitely on this list. Potassium dilates blood vessels, thus effectively helps keep blood pressure lower. Therefore, it is safe to say that tomatoes are vegetables that lower blood pressure.
Choose different varieties, different color tomatoes, they will have a slightly different set of vitamins.

Tomatoes can be grown not only in the greenhouse, as we are used to, but also outdoors or on the balcony in a flower bed. It is important to choose the breed well and take care of it responsibly.
If you are just a novice gardener, feel free to ask for advice, short landscaping visit in courses or ask your neighbors for advice. Having your own tomatoes is really fun, but there are some tricks you need to know about it.
PHYSICAL LOAD IN THE GARDEN
We live in a stressful world and this puts a strain on our hearts. It can be difficult to find time to relax and get away from stress. This can be done much easier in the garden. And there is nothing to hide, in the garden and in the garden you really have to move. As for hypertension, this is just a plus. The advantage of gardening is that you can adjust the pace and difficulty of the exercise yourself. Furthermore, it is an active outdoor activity.
And if you grow your own veggies too, it’s a great hobby with delicious results 🙂
