A high hedge and other tricks to hide from neighbors

The neighbors are not always kind, the environment behind the fence is not always well organized. Private space and intimacy – the most common reasons for cultivation high hedge. Below are some other ways to add privacy to your property.

HIGH HOUSED WALL

A hedge approximately 1.5 m high visually separates and protects your space, but you will be able to communicate with your neighbor through the fence. And vice versa: if your neighbor’s house is on a hill or simply has a higher foundation, your land is like an open book.

If you need to install a hedge, height is very important here, not only in terms of privacy, but also for visual issues. A high trimmed hedge (2 m or more) in a small garden solves the problem of privacy, but can give the impression of being blocked, closed. Especially with thujas, firs or other evergreen plants, this effect is really unpleasant, the environment appears oppressive, as if you couldn’t breathe.

Specialists of modern greening courses «Yellow Wheelbarrow» recommend, if you already have such a hedge, to plant light openwork plants in front of it (herbaceous perennials are suitable). If you have more space, an entire flower garden could even appear. The gaze must travel in ascending orderas if it gradually follows the story, starting from the bottom and ending somewhere high. It would therefore be necessary to soften additional plants so that the gaze is not reflected directly on the vertical wall.

Deciduous hedge

If privacy is most needed only in warm weather, choose a deciduous hedge.

On the farm it is better to choose hedges of free-growing trees and shrubs, do not plant them in bright vertical rows. Let the boundaries of the farm be indescribable, known only to you. If protection from road noise and wind is needed, hedges can be planted in two rows.

FENCES AND TRESSES

A common way to cover is fences. Before building fences, check the height and opening requirements depending on the country of the world. In other words, you cannot cast a high and total shadow over your neighbor’s fate unless you have his written consent.

Trusses – a slightly nicer way to lock eyes. A trellis is an openwork wall made diagonally from wooden planks, used mainly as a support for climbing plants. It looks really decorative, and even when the vines have not yet put out their leaves in early spring, the trellis itself will provide aesthetic cover.

Apply trusses to stylistics. They look great in English-style gardens with lush plants of various heights, roses and flower beds of various colors. Paint the trellis a color already used in your garden to avoid too many daisies.

Trusses can become not only a covering, but also container object – just plant some delicious grapes. Be sure to examine suitable vines, look for them from specialized growers, choose trellises of appropriate height and strength for them.

Another type of similar solution is screen. A freestanding screen is usually slightly openwork, for example woven from wicker, bamboo, trellis-like wood. It solves the privacy problem where it counts, because you can simply move it to another location. It is useful to have a screen when the fence has not yet been built, the hedge has not yet grown, the creepers have not yet grown, etc. The screen can also be used creatively to prepare beautiful parties or simply let children create their own play corner.

ROOF, UMBRELLA AND VICTORY

Tent from above required if you want privacy from neighbors living above, the condominium or offices next door. Without hiding from the sun or rain, just install a pergola. Its roof consists of horizontal boards built vertically or slightly inclined. Depending on the width of the planks and the degree of inclination, the roof can let the sun’s rays pass through or block them, thus creating a shadow. As far as privacy is concerned, the same rules apply, so you can close it while looking at the space from above, but without obscuring the presence inside.

If the area of ​​private need is larger, it is not necessary to make a large pergola roof for the entire space: you will only get darkness and will not feel that you are outside. Use it and combine it wisely some solutions: a pergola, an umbrella, a special stretched cloth that resembles a sail. Make your choice light materials and light colors.

SOME TRICKS TO CREATE A WELCOMING PRIVACY

The effect of fences and trees. If a wood fence or other blind fence is well-maintained and beautiful, but does not provide sufficient cover, plant trees in front of it. Trees with a canopy higher than the top line of the fence would be very suitable for a well-kept, geometric garden. Plant such trees at equal distances so that the trunks of the trees are rhythmically repeated against the background of the fence, and the crown of the tree forms a second layer above the fence. If there is less space, the trees can be shaped into espaliers, so their foliage is flatter.

Distraction of attention. Guide your guests’ eyes where you want them to look. If you cover an unsightly spot (post, compost bin, dog house) with bright flowers and blooming vines, you will draw attention to that spot. Therefore, it is worth creating certain attraction points. To keep them from looking at the windows, place an interesting sculpture outside. To avoid seeing the transformer station, install the fountain much closer.

Privacy from sounds. If there is a noisy street or other unpleasant sounds nearby, plants are a good choice. They not only absorb sound, but also allow air to pass through, so a good microclimate is created in the plot. To create a cozier space, it is worth installing a tub of water, the gurgling of which will be like a soothing soundtrack to your plot.
