In the early 1940s, Charles and Ray Eames spent several years developing a technique for molding plywood into three-dimensional shapes, creating a series of furniture and sculptures. Among these initial designs, the two-part elephant proved to be the most technically challenging due to its sharp curves, and the piece never entered mass production. A prototype, given to Charles’s 14-year-old daughter Lucia Eames, was loaned to the Museum of Modern Art in New York for an exhibition in 1946.
After a limited edition in 2007, Vitra has added a new version of the legendary Eames Elephant to its portfolio. The sculptural decorative figure with high-quality paint has been available since 2017.

About Charles Eames and Ray Eames
Charles Eames was born in 1907 in St. Louis, Missouri. There he attended school and developed an interest in engineering and architecture. After studying for two years at Washington University in St. Louis and being fired for defending Frank Lloyd Wright, he began working at an architectural firm. In 1929 he married his first wife, Catherine Woermann (they divorced in 1941), and a year later Charles’ only daughter, Lucia, was born. In 1930 Charles founded his own architectural firm. He began to extend his design ideas beyond architecture and received a scholarship to the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where he eventually became head of the design department.
Charles and Ray married in 1941 and moved to California, where they continued their work designing furniture with plywood moldings. During World War II, they were contracted by the United States Navy to produce molded plywood splints, stretchers, and experimental glider shells. In 1946, Evans Products began producing the Eames’ molded plywood furniture. The molded plywood chair was called “the chair of the century” by influential architecture critic Esther McCoy. Production was soon taken over by Herman Miller, Inc., which continues to produce furniture in the United States today. The other partner, Vitra International, produces furniture in Europe.
In 1949, Charles and Ray designed and built their own home in Pacific Palisades, California, as part of the Case Study House Program sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine. Its design and innovative use of materials have made the House a mecca for architects and designers from around the world. Today it is considered one of the most important post-war residences in the world.
