How to plant a terrace if surfinia and pelargonium are already bored? You really don’t have to limit yourself to annual flowers and regular plastic pots. Find out what unexpected solutions for terraces and practical advice we have offered together He lives in Juknevičiene from the company Atrast.lt:
Below are three specific ideas on how to plant a terrace in a modern and interesting way:
1) Which non-traditional plants to choose;
2) What to replace boring plastic vases with;
3) How to create a special corner to make your terrace particularly fashionable.
You will also find practical instructions on how to plant non-standard plants in non-standard pots.
1 IDEA FOR VEGETABLES ON THE TERRACE: INCREDIBLE POTTED PLANTS
Usually on the terraces we see flowers that bloom annually such as surfinia, geranium, etc. They are bright and summery, but sometimes you want something different, more interesting. In that case, I recommend trying perennials.
After all, you can grow almost anything in pots: from bluebells puffing in the wind, to fruit bushes and fruit trees! By combining edible and non-edible plants, playing with their heights and textures, you can create incredibly impressive compositions.
Here are edible plants of different heights growing in Živilė pots:
- Apple berry + strawberry;
- Apple plum + dwarf cherry tomatoes and basil.
Apple trees grow quite tall, so they are very suitable for those with more spacious terraces, they create a vertical effect. Lower plants add volume and greenery. These pots look great from spring to autumn: at first fragrant apple blossoms delight, then red strawberries appear, tomatoes ripen, and in autumn you can pick juicy apples. A true fairy tale!

Currant bushes, raspberries, decorative garlic, cranberries (fill the pot with acidic soil) and many other plants can also grow in pots, so feel free to experiment.
IDEA 2: NON-STANDARD VASES
Believe me, stylish pots are half the secret of how to plant a terrace interestingly and modernly. Today you can certainly find pots of various sizes, shapes and materials, which can become stylish accents on the terrace.
For example, rusty metal flower pots immediately add a touch of modernity, are durable and long-lasting. From Atrast.lt They can be ordered in a variety of sizes, diameters and shapes, rusted naturally or painted to suit your environment.
Tip: use vases of different sizes and shapes, but of the same color and material. This way you will be guaranteed to create a harmonious image of the environment. It certainly won’t be boring, because at any time you can change the combinations of plants in the pots, group the pots themselves differently, move them to another place, etc.
HOW TO PLANTING IN LARGE POTS
Once you’ve chosen your plants and pots, it’s time to plant. Živile and I decided to plant raspberries. For them we chose a large square rusty metal vase. The bottom is equipped with holes for drainage of excess water, and the inner walls are covered with a layer of thin foam that protects the roots of the plant from overheating or freezing. Therefore, there is no need to use any plastic pots.
Živilė filled the large pot as follows:
- They added generously on the bottom expanded clay granules – they will act as a draining layer, preventing humidity from accumulating on the bottom and causing the roots to rot;
- Then it filled up composted soil and we supplied it abundantly with agroperlite granules. These white granules loosen the soil, help air reach the plant’s roots more easily (you can read more about perlite read here);
- It was still raining above expanded clay and I mixed everything well.
Živilė made holes in the prepared substrate and planted two raspberry seedlings next to each other. Then the plants watered generously. That’s all. An unexpected, interesting and truly modern terrace decoration is complete!

IDEA 3: EXPERIMENTAL CORNER
What is this? It’s a terraced area where your imagination can run free. Here everything can be not according to the rules, but just as you wish, interesting and fun. For example, like this green wall planted with strawberries:
You can plant not only strawberries or strawberries, but also blooming flowers, herbs (for example, basil, oregano) or all together.
Also various closed water systems (fountains, waterfalls, springs), trellises, pergolas, birdbaths, etc. planted with plants can look very impressive. You can have many ideas see here.
The best part is that this type of patio space is meant for experimentation, so any mistakes are forgivable. So let yourself go and dive into creativity!
