When the tulips bloom in the pot, you will thank yourself for not being lazy in the fall and trying this planting method. You will place the vase on the terrace or at the entrance of the house and you will be able to enjoy the flowers from the beginning of spring. When to plant
Tulips can be planted in pots from October to November. If you miss this period, even in December, you will still have fun.
How to prepare for planting
For planting you will need:
- Pot. Daina chooses terracotta pots, which she has used for many years. He does not wash them, but simply cleans them with a brush (both inside and outside).
- Drainage, for example expanded clay granules or pebbles, so that the water in the pot does not stagnate and flows away easily.
- Substrate. Nothing special is needed, as tulip bulbs are rich in nutrients. The song says that both purchased substrate and ordinary garden soil are suitable. If summer flowers were growing in the pot, you can use the same soil instead of changing it. The only rule is not to use the substrate in which the tulips grew.
- Tulip bulbs. You can also plant other bulbous plants, such as daffodils, this way.
Tulips in pots: planting instructions
How to plant:
- Cover the bottom of the pot with expanded clay or another drainage agent.
- Fill the pot with the substrate, leaving a depth of 3 bulbs. This is one of the most important rules for planting bulbous flowers. No matter whether you’re planting small scallions, medium-sized tulips, or giant ornamental garlic bulbs, measure the depth of the hole based on the size of the onion you’re planting and multiply by three.
- Nail the bulbs. It is important that the top of the bulb is facing upwards. Since tulips only grow in the pot for one year, it is not necessary to leave large empty spaces: a 35 cm diameter pot can fit 20 tulip bulbs.
- Tulips can be grown together with other bulbous plants in pots, but Daina recommends growing a variety in a pot: she says that this way it is easier to create compositions on the terrace in spring.

- Run the spiked bulbs. Daina recommends the use of organic preparations: they protect the bulbs and saturate them with nutrients.
- Fill the bulbs with substrate and water very abundantly again: next time you will water only in spring.
- Don’t forget to mark which bulbs you planted and where: special tables or ice cream sticks will do for this.
- Take the pot to a dry place for the winter.
Where to store planted pots
One of the main success factors for growing tulips in pots is how and where you will store the pots during the cold season. To avoid mistakes, follow these basic rules for storing jars:
- Keep your cookware cool. The bulbs survive frosts, but do not like large temperature differences. If the soil freezes and thaws frequently, excess standing water can accumulate, which can cause the bulbs to rot. A cellar, a woodshed, an unheated garage, a roof terrace will be perfect.
- Keep pots dry. It shouldn’t rain or snow on them. If you don’t have cool rooms or shelter outside, wrap the tops of pots with plastic or cover them with a large plate, Daina recommends.
Daina keeps the pots planted in the garage. They are stacked in rows: the larger pots are laid out, a board is placed on top, and the smaller pots are placed on top. Stacked pots take up much less space, and covered boards protect the bulbs from fun-loving rodents.
What to do in spring
It will be possible to take the pots outdoors in the second half of March and start watering little by little.
It is important not to overdo watering at the beginning of growth – it is better to do less, but more often. As the bulbs grow, more water will be needed.
