Changing the garden is a really timid step to take. For many years only grass and a few individual plants reigned on Egidija’s land. However, the renovated farmhouse boasts handmade flower beds, a rose garden and a garden. And although the transformation of the plot is not yet final, the sight is already much more pleasing to the eye.
Although she has owned the land for 15 years, Egidija implemented the changes in the last year, 2023. After years of mowing a large lawn that brought no joy and planting single flowers, Egidija, inspired “Yellow Wheelbarrow” courses.«Garden Style».has finally implemented the following plot changes:
- A new garden shed built;
- Leveled the plot;
- Installed a new lawn;
- He installed cobblestone paths and a playground with his own hands;
- Flower gardens installed;
- Planted a rose;
- An orchard area is planned.
Land acquisition
After purchasing the land 15 years ago, Egidija «inherited» a small garden shed, a row of berry bushes and some flowers. For seven years the woman dreamed of arranging the flowerbeds and re-planning the land, and mowing the lawn on an empty lot was already tiring.
The location of the land is windy, on a hill, the soil is clayey, so even when choosing plants you have to turn your head every time, what will grow there. And the plants are expected to solve problem areas of the land, for example by hiding neighbors’ fences surrounding the land.
A collection of 100 roses
At the very first «Yellow Wheelbarrow» courses for rose lovers, Egidija implemented knowledge about classifying, pairing, caring for roses in her collection of almost 100 roses, which she accumulated without any order, simply buying what she liked. «I have climbing roses, bush roses, old roses, park roses, thistles, etc. scented and lightly scented, with thorns and less thorny. I bought practically all the roses from the Sibirka rose garden when I learned about them from the Yellow Wheelbarrow», says Egidija.
«If I say that I have a favorite rose, the others start to get jealous, so I love them all. Naturally, with my little eyes, I caress ‘Alchymist’ more for the beauty of the flowers, although when winter is about to sleep, we argue more. ‘Lions Rose’ – for the beauty of the white flowers that shine in the evening from afar. I love ‘MMe Isaac Pereire’ for the wonderful scent of flowers, delicious jam and liqueur, so I treated this girl a lot when it rusts. The ‘Bukavu’, ‘Apache’, tolerates my transplants better and blooms until frost.»
First mistakes
Realizing that she wanted to change something, Egidija began to gain knowledge In the «Yellow Wheelbarrow» courses.«Garden Style Conferences”.And. Since then, changes in the garden began to move forward: inspired by new knowledge, but still without a clear plan for her farm, Egidija began collecting plants, planting them in fences.
The garden became fuller, but still lacked harmony. “I bought one plant unit at a time, thinking that I would multiply the most successful ones myself,” Egidija planned, but this strategy was difficult to implement, so it was not yet possible to create the desired image on the plot.
«I kept buying plants one by one, the most beautiful, most interesting ones, without really thinking about their properties. In my garden-«wasteland» the kemer, insect killer and alum were unhappy. I didn’t find any other plants, because I tore out the bluebells, like beetroot, aspen, horsetail, miscanthus, while weeds and yarrow conquered the lawn. Then I wanted to get interested more to other plants, I started looking again In the «Yellow Wheelbarrow» courses. topics on perennial plants.»
Garden transformation: a turning point
The fateful changes of the Egidija garden occurred within a year. In 2023, after the construction of a new garden shed on the farm, the land was cleared, so after leveling the land and sowing the lawn, there was no longer any reason to postpone landscaping the land.
The installation of the lawn was not without its peculiarities. After leveling the ground, Egidija immediately began to sow the lawn, but she had no way to roll it properly. After using a bucket for rolling, Egidija still regretted this decision: after the first watering, all the seeds «floated» out of the soil. When sowing the lawn for the second time, Egidija used a special roller. He chose a more drought-tolerant seed mix, since there is no irrigation system on the land, but he noticed that not all types of seeds in the mix germinated in unirrigated soil.
After sowing the lawn, Egidija prepared a parking lot. After digging 15 cm of earth and adding gravel to this depth, he planted agrofilm, a plastic honeycomb and covered it with pebbles. By the same principle they built straight paths to the entrance to the hut and from the hut to the well. The view of the tracks was very pleasing to the eye, especially when the straight boundaries of the tracks disappeared after the edges of the tracks were covered with plants. The main layout divides the land into two main parts: the flower garden and the orchard area.
An expanding flower garden
«After conferencejosé listened to arguments about ecodesign, the «Dutch wave», carried out grandiose projects, adapting plants to nature, there was a desire to have not only a rose garden, but also a tasteful, perennial flower garden. Then I listened to «The Yellow Wheelbarrow». courses on plant compositionFrom Bellflower design. That’s right»Yellow Wheelbarrow» on the website lots of free material on all topics, all you need is the time and desire to read.”
After the terrace was built, they wanted to surround it with taller vegetation, so a flower garden appeared around the terrace. Since the soil is windy, bell-shaped plants provide a wonderful breeze. The bed features Chinese miscanthus ‘Gracillimus’, sedum and lime. Egidija blocked a troublesome electric pole with the luxurious Japanese rowans ‘Dodong’. Medlieva is planted on the other side of the terrace. Egidija chooses trees based on their roots: they must be shallow, because there are many underground communications that cannot be damaged.
In spring Egidija expects a sea of flowers: over 250 tulips and 150 daffodils have been planted on the land.
Egidija was able to apply all the knowledge gathered during training courses and conferences by redesigning the land, installing tracks, designing flower beds and an orchard area. The vision of the land is not yet final, because Egidija’s plans include changes to the flowerbeds and the expansion of the orchard. According to Egidija, after starting the transformation of the land, the first tasks were not done – no attention was paid to the zoning and planning of the land, so there is still a lot of work to be done before the final vision of the land. But already today, relaxing on the terrace with a cup of coffee becomes much sweeter when you are surrounded by the pleasant result of ideas created with your own hands.
Thanks to Egidija for sharing the transformation of her garden. If you also want to share your results after taking the course, we look forward to your stories and photos – get in touch.
