They structure the garden with their various shapes and blooms, bringing a touch of joy. Let’s see how to choose, plant and maintain our spring shrubs.
The right choice
Packaging in containers Shrubs can be planted in the garden throughout the year, this does not exempt you from respecting some fundamental parameters that will guarantee you great success:
- Choose your shrubs based on the nature of your soil, climate and exposure of your garden. The shape, color of the flowers or their scent will complement these selection criteria.
- Shrubs must be inside perfect hygienic conditions. If a plant has pests or suspicious spots, move on!
- Always think about the future development of the plant before introducing it into the garden. Some shrubs can quickly grow to impressive proportions!
A successful sowing
To ensure better recovery, shrubs must be planted outside periods of frost and heat waves, in a location corresponding to their specific needs.
Planting in open ground:
- Hydrate the plant’s root ball in a bowl of room temperature water before removing it from the pots.
- During this time, dig a hole three times equal in size in all directions to the size of the pot.
- Scratch the bottom of the hole and its walls to allow the roots to take root.
- Make necessary amendments to improve the soil: sand, compost and gravel in heavy soils, organic amendments in sandy soils to enrich them.
- Untangle the roots, being careful not to damage them.
- Place them on a bed of compost and earth and adjust the height so that the collar of the plant is flush with the ground level.
- Fill any empty spaces with soil and pack it firmly around the roots.
- If necessary, install a stake.
- Leave a basin around the entire perimeter of the shrub to collect water from watering.
- Water abundantly.
In a jar:
- Choose a vase with a hole in the bottom that is twice the size of the original vase.
- Install a bed of clay balls or gravel equal to 20% of the total volume at the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage.
- Prepare a very rich mixture of soil and compost and pour a layer of it onto the draining bed.
- Position the root ball so that the collar of the plant is flush with the surface of the pot.
- Complete with the dough and package.
- Water abundantly.
Well managed irrigation
A newly planted shrub requires special care, especially in terms of watering, to ensure good recovery.
Water regularly for the first few years as the roots take hold. So let nature take its course except in times of heat and drought when you will give it a little help.
In the pots, watering must be very regular. Water abundantly once a week and add a specific organic fertilizer during the growth period.
Adequately sized operations
remember to mulch the base of your shrubs to space out watering and maintain the freshness of the soil but also to prevent the invasion of weeds.
Appropriate actions :
- Take gloves and shears whose blades have previously been disinfected.
- Start by removing faded inflorescences to see more clearly.
- Then prune the dead branches at the base.
- Remove stems that cross each other in the center of the plant to bring in maximum light and prevent pests from taking refuge there.
- Prune outer branches that interfere with the symmetry of the shrub.
A limited interview
Once established, shrubs require little maintenance.
Appropriate actions :
- Remove weeds from the base of shrubs often to prevent weeds from taking advantage of irrigation water in their place.
- Mulch the base to keep the soil fresh and avoid the task of weeding.
- Add organic fertilizer such as crushed horn or guano during the growing period.
