The robot lawnmower: why you will like it

A perfectly cut lawn 7 days a week and without effort is possible with a robot lawnmower! Without it, you spend time maintaining your lawn, at least once a week depending on the season. This meadow keeps your mind busy! And what’s more, if you have a busy schedule on Saturday, you won’t even be able to mow on Sunday (and no longer on late Sunday mornings!) With it?, you only have to schedule it once and it mows every day without you having to do anything. Enjoy quiet weekends without having to take care of the lawn!

The advantages of a robotic lawnmower

  • Automatic
  • Ecological : runs on electricity, does not emit greenhouse gases
  • Silent : can be used every day at any time
  • Economic : Does not consume much energy
  • Programmable
  • Save time considerable
  • Pleasure gain
  • Optimal protection against theft (alarm and PIN code)
  • Mowed lawn everyday

How does it work?

When should you mow?

A robotic lawnmower cuts the grass every day, even on Sunday afternoons. This is exactly what it was made for!During mowing, it shreds the grass very finely (mulching), creating natural fertilizer. So the grass is more beautiful, more compact, greener every day. It is not necessary to collect the grass clippings.

With what energy does it work?

It is electric and battery operated, which means it is very quiet. There are 2 types: fully automatic lawnmowers are recharged on the charging base and lawnmowers that do not have this capability must be recharged by the owner.

Why don’t you go to your neighbor’s house?

The lawnmower, equipped with sensors, will cut within the perimeter defined by the perimeter cable. The perimeter wire is used to delimit the ground and obstacles within the garden (flowerbeds, pond, etc.). For trees it is not necessary to lay the cable, as the lawnmower, thanks to its sensors, will bypass it (for trees with exposed roots it is advisable to install a perimeter wire).

Perimeter cable

  • There are also lawnmowers that work without a perimeter cord, but these are intended for small surfaces and are less common, which is why I won’t dwell on this part: but know that it exists!

Should you think about turning it on?

The robotic lawnmower is programmable, so the owner does not have to intervene to start the lawnmower. It is necessary to program the days and time slots in which the lawnmower will be activated. It is strongly recommended to operate it every day.

What if it rains?

Most models are equipped with rain sensors, some even work in the rain. Depending on the model, as soon as the water becomes too abundant, the robotic lawnmower will return to the charging base on its own or will stop cutting, but the owner will have to put it away (lawnmower without charging base).

Can it harm living things?

In terms of safety, robot lawnmowers are equipped with very effective sensors, so they are safe for humans and animals. Furthermore, very often, it is equipped with a lifting sensor, in case of lifting it stops as a safety measure. (watch the video)

On what basis can it be used?

The robotic lawnmower is suitable for land with a surface area between 300 and 10,000 m². Depending on the model, it can overcome slopes of up to 50%. If your soil forms too many “waves,” you can level it by adding soil.

  • Some mower models can only handle a meter at a time
  • Others can manage up to 4. Let me explain:
    • Your property consists of a main lawn, a gravel courtyard and a garden on the other side of the gravel courtyard. The lawnmower will cut a first area and, following the path indicated by the perimeter wire, will pass over your gravel area to cut the other part of the lawn.

It is a precious object, what are the anti-theft protections?

  • Is it a valuable item that is easy to steal? Yes, it is a precious object, but on the other hand, robot lawnmowers are equipped with an alarm and pin code. If a malicious third party tries to take possession of it, it will ring. To make it work you need to activate the PIN code, which only you know.

How to install a robot lawnmower?

Installation : 2 solutions are available to you. Or have it installed by a professional for some additional costs; or you do it yourself, which is quite possible.

  • The perimeter cable must be installed to delimit the area to be mowed and the main obstacles (flower beds, ponds, paths, trees with exposed roots, etc.). It can be buried or placed directly on the lawn.
    • At ground level: place it firmly on the ground and drive in the supplied nails. In 10 days the grass will have completely covered it and it will be invisible.
    • Buried: you need to dig a small trench 3 cm deep and 2 cm wide and place the wire there, then cover with earth. (but for that you will have to use biscuits!).
  • Advise :
    • The cable runs from the charging base and must be installed clockwise
    • Must not cross
    • When going around an obstacle, the forward and return cables must be at a maximum distance of 1 cm so that the lawnmower can overcome them. (this «cancels» the effect of the perimeter wire and the clipper passes over it as if there were no wire)

How to choose my robot lawnmower?

  • Depending on the surface : you must opt for a robot whose capacity is at least equal to your surface, favoring a margin of 20% on the capacity of the lawnmower. If you have multiple areas, you should opt for a lawn mower that can handle different terrains.
  • With or without charging station? It depends on your activity and your desire for the degree of autonomy of your robot.
    • The lawnmower with charging station is completely automatic and returns to the base in case of rain (for some models it also works in the rain). Preferred for those who carry out a professional activity far from home.
    • Without a charging station, the lawnmower must be recharged by the owner and in case of rain it stops cutting but remains on the lawn.
  • What if my garden has fruit trees? The mower will pass over the fruit and cut it. If the fruits are too large, it will bypass obstacles and this will increase the working time. In this case it is advisable to regularly collect the fallen fruit, to facilitate the work of the lawnmower.
  • What if my garden has trees, a vegetable patch and a pond? You should opt for a brush cutter with a perimeter wire. Just go around them with the boundary wire and the mower won’t reach that area.

And on the price side?

It costs on average €1 per m² depending on the model of the lawnmower.

After all this, you know everything about the robot lawnmower! So, does this tempt you?
